The Model III is designed to compete directly with the BMW 3 Series, according to the report. Looking at both cars side by side, it's easy to see why Musk thinks the Model III will have a fair shot against the BMW 3 Series; both are minimalist in design, while losing none of the high-end pedigree attached to both brands. "We were going to call it Model E for a while, and then Ford sued us saying it wanted to use the Model E—I thought this is crazy, Ford's trying to kill sex!" Musk said, referring to a model-naming sequence that would have spelled out "sex" when adding the would-be "Model E" to its predecessors, the Model S and Model X. "So [I thought] we'll have to think of another name." The vehicle will reportedly use cheaper batteries manufactured at Tesla's U.S.-based Gigafactory, which is scheduled to ramp up production in 2017.
